Unfortunately, all of these dimensions are not reflected in any single design typology reviewed here. A second merit of the typological approach is the provision of common mixed methods research designs, of common ways in which qualitative and quantitative research can be combined, as is done for example in the major designs of Creswell and Plano Clark (2011). Contrary to other authors, however, we do not consider these designs as a feature of a whole study, but rather, in line with Guest (2013), as a feature of one part of a design in which one qualitative and one quantitative component are combined. Although one study could have only one purpose, one point of integration, et cetera, we believe that combining “designs” is the rule and not the exception. Therefore, complex designs need to be constructed and modified as needed, and during the writing phase the design should be described in detail and perhaps given a creative and descriptive name. As part of a large, multi-level study of social isolation and health in the aging process, we developed a three-item loneliness scale for use on a telephone survey.

Two case studies

Of all purposes involved, then, which one should be the primary basis for the design? For more information on how to articulate design complexity based on multiple purposes of mixing, see Schoonenboom et al. (2017). Simultaneity (“Simultanität”) forms the basis of the distinction between concurrent and sequential designs. In a sequential design, the quantitative component precedes the qualitative component, or vice versa. In the notation of Morse (1991), concurrence is indicated by a “+” between components (e. g., QUAL + quan), while sequentiality is indicated with a “→” (QUAL → quan).

Since IQ is designed to be a fundamentally curved scale, using concurrent validity as a way of confirming new means is essential to its usability. For example, connecting follows naturally in sequential designs, while merging can occur in any design. Thus, the design sets parameters for what methodological integration choices can be made. A matched pairs design is an experimental design where pairs of participants are matched in terms of key variables, such as age or socioeconomic status. One member of each pair is then placed into the experimental group and the other member into the control group.

Mixed methods research (“Mixed Methods” or “MM”) is the sibling of multimethod research (“Methodenkombination”) in which either solely multiple qualitative approaches or solely multiple quantitative approaches are combined.

Independent variable (IV)

Teddlie and Tashakkori’s (2009) multilevel mixed designs and fully integrated mixed designs are both complex designs, but for different reasons. A multilevel mixed design is more complex ontologically, because it involves multiple levels of reality. For example, data might be collected both at the levels of schools and students, neighborhood and households, companies and employees, communities and inhabitants, or medical practices and patients (Yin 2013). Integration of these data does not only involve the integration of qualitative and quantitative data, but also the integration of data originating from different sources and existing at different levels.

This type of analysis can reveal whether questions are measuring what they are intended to measure and provide further evidence for concurrent validity as a faucet of criterion validity (Lin & Yao, 2014). This allows researchers to determine whether higher scores on the questionnaire correlate with higher scores on these other measures and vice versa, providing evidence of concurrent validity for the questionnaire (Bowers, 2004). These variables share the key characteristic that their impact would be expected to accumulate as a function of number of experimental sessions. In the more common and technically simpler variation, qualitative and quantitative data collection occurs in parallel and analysis for integration begins well after the data collection process has proceeded or has been completed. The nature of control for coincidental events (i.e., history) provided by the within-tier comparison in both concurrent and nonconcurrent multiple baseline designs is relatively straightforward. A potential treatment effect in any single tier could plausibly be explained as a result of a coincidental event. However, each replication of the possible treatment effect that takes place at a substantially distinct calendar date reduces the plausibility of this threat. Each replication requires an assumption of a separate event coinciding with a distinct phase change.

Firstly, researchers can ensure that the data used for concurrent review is complete and up to date. Concurrent validity, on the other hand, refers to the agreement between a measure and an existing criterion that has already been established as valid. This type of validity is used to evaluate new measures against established ones in order to determine their accuracy and reliability. Because there is a strong correlation between these subscales, researchers can better assume that those with higher life satisfaction are predicted to express more positive affect and have higher levels of health status (Baker et al., 2007). For example, a personality assessment may be compared to criteria such as how much people like the person taking the test or how well they work with others to determine its concurrent validity. Concurrent validity is especially important when measuring variables that have been malleable over time or are difficult to observe directly.

Second, the across-tier comparison assumes that extraneous variables will affect multiple tiers similarly. If an extraneous variable were to have a tier-specific effect, it would be falsely interpreted as a treatment effect. This comparison can reveal the influence of an extraneous variable only if it causes a change in several tiers at about the same time.

A quota sampling strategy was used to achieve an approximately equal distribution of respondents across the six gender-by-race/ethnic group combinations. In an intervention mixed methods framework, the focus is on conducting a mixed methods intervention. These mixed methods researchers are likely to believe that qualitative and quantitative data and approaches will add insights as one considers most, if not all, research questions. The key point of this section is for the researcher to begin a study with at least one research question and then carefully consider what the purposes for mixing are. One can use mixed methods to examine different aspects of a single research question, or one can use separate but related qualitative and quantitative research questions.

Thus, convergent validity is a type of construct validity, while concurrent validity is a form of criterion validity (Gregory, 2000). In general, any correlation between two related measures taken at the same point in time can be used to demonstrate concurrent validity.
